Founded by Leigh Altshuler in 2020, this unique shop brings together a curated selection of new, used, and rare books, alongside jars of delicious, hand-crafted pickles.

With a mission to revive the charm of independent bookstores, Sweet Pickle Books thrives on its love for literature, quirky finds, and a touch of old-school New York spirit. Whether you're here to trade books for pickles, hunt for hidden literary gems, or grab a taste of something unexpected, every visit promises a one-of-a-kind experience.

WE ARE accepting donations at this time. We will ONLY be accepting BOOKS AND RECORDS on TUESDAYS AND WEDNESDAYS.

NOTE: ALL DONATIONS IN EXCHANGE FOR PICKLES. ONLY IN-STORE.

Leigh Altshuler is the visionary behind Sweet Pickle Books, blending her love for books, nostalgia, and quirky charm into a one-of-a-kind bookstore in New York City’s Lower East Side. With a background in photography, design, and storytelling, she founded the shop in 2020, creating a space where literature meets pickles and community thrives.

Passionate about preserving the magic of independent bookstores, Leigh built Sweet Pickle Books on the idea of bringing people together through shared stories, unique finds, and a little bit of briny goodness. First time going here, and I didn't know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised at the charm after entering. If you're into books you could probably be I'm this store for hours. There is a loose organization to everything, but the books are just kind of random on the shelf so you never know what you might find. Also the best part......the pickles!

they really do exchange pickles for books! make sure you follow the guidelines (usually on their storefront/you can call/check their website). staff was very informative about the history of the business, pickles and what to do with rejected books (there’s a small book box in Seward park you can leave them in). exchange was super smooth and simple, can’t wait to come back!
